US power plant map
A power plants map of the United States from EIA’s monthly generator inventory, each plant placed where EIA says it is, coloured by primary energy source and sized by capacity. Click a power plant for its operator, fuel and megawatts, with a link back to the EIA record.
Map shows 13,012 of 14,659 plants (exporter: kept the 13012 largest of 14659 plants by nameplate MW (smallest kept: 1.4 MW); plant_count_total and total_mw_all cover all plants). The plant count and total capacity above cover all 14,659.

USA power grid map: what is and is not drawn
A full map of the US power grid has three layers: where electricity is generated, who balances it, and the wires between them. This page is the first layer. The balancing authority map covers the second, and the nodal price map shows what power costs at points on the grid. Transmission lines are not drawn on these maps.
Every field comes from the export named in the source line above. Where EIA leaves a field blank — an operator, a capacity, a coordinate — the page says unknown rather than filling it in. Plants without coordinates are counted in the totals but cannot appear on the power grid map.
Power plant map FAQ
What does this power plants map show?
+
US power plants from the Energy Information Administration’s monthly generator inventory (Form EIA-860M, which updates the annual EIA-860) — generators of at least 1 MW of nameplate capacity, summed per plant — placed at the coordinates EIA reports, coloured by primary energy source and sized by total capacity. If the export keeps only the largest plants, the page says how many were left out.
Is this a map of the US power grid?
+
It is the generation half of a map of the US power grid. It shows where power plants sit; it does not draw transmission lines or substations. For who balances supply and demand in each region, see the balancing authority map; for prices at grid nodes, see the nodal map.
Is this an electric grid map or an electrical grid map?
+
Both terms describe the same thing. This electric grid map (sometimes called an electrical grid map) plots generating plants; the regions that operate them are on the balancing authority map.
Does this electrical power grid map show transmission lines?
+
No. This electrical power grid map is plants only. Drawing lines we have not verified against a source would be guesswork, so none are drawn.
Where does the USA power grid map data come from?
+
The USA power grid map uses EIA’s generator inventory (Form EIA-860M), with the exact spreadsheet linked in the source line at the top of the page. Each plant links to its EIA plant record. Fields EIA does not report are shown as unknown.
How do I find a power plant near me?
+
Zoom the power plant map USA view to your area and click any power plant dot to see its name, operator, state, primary fuel and capacity, with a link back to EIA.
How is this US power plants map different from a live grid dashboard?
+
This US power plants map changes when EIA publishes a new monthly inventory, and the page shows which month it reflects. Live load, fuel mix and prices per grid operator are on the live grid pages.
