East BAA: Baseline Normal Operating Conditions; West BAA: Baseline Normal Operating Conditions. SPP states that Resource Advisories are still normal operating conditions; they are mapped to "watch" here.

The condition is SPP’s own operating state for the Central US grid — normal, a watch when reserves run thin, or an emergency. It is copied from the operator’s notices, not inferred here; where the operator publishes no feed this page can read, it says so rather than guessing.

Load — SPP demand

Load is total demand served on the SPP system in megawatts. Figures are the values in the export; a dash means the feed did not carry the number, not that it was zero.

Prices (LMP) — SPP power prices

Average

$/MWh, real-time
Lowest node
−$322.79
Highest node
$248.64

as of · source: portal.spp.org

A locational marginal price (LMP) is the cost of serving one more megawatt-hour at a given node: energy, plus congestion, plus losses. The spread between the lowest and highest node is congestion on the SPP transmission system. Negative prices mean surplus supply, usually wind or solar, at that location.

RTBM 5-minute LMP by settlement location (latest interval, GMT interval end) across 1,612 pricing nodes: low -322.79 $/MWh, average 63.86 $/MWh, high 248.64 $/MWh. The export carries no coordinates for these nodes, so the map cannot place them.

FAQ — Southwest Power Pool

What is SPP?

SPP — sometimes typed S.P.P. or SPP. — is Southwest Power Pool, the regional transmission organization that runs the grid and wholesale electricity market across much of the central United States.

Where do SPP power prices come from?

SPP power prices are locational marginal prices from SPP’s Integrated Marketplace, cleared every five minutes in real time. The Prices section summarises the latest interval with its as-of time.

Is there an SPP price map or SPP LMP map?

SPP publishes its own price contour map. The Map section links to the nodal price map, where the SPP LMP map layer is an SPP price map of the latest real-time price at each node, as of the time shown.

How big is SPP’s footprint?

SPP’s footprint has grown several times, most recently westward. The balancing authority map shows the current boundary of SPP power operations, and the related blog posts below cover the SPP footprint in detail.

Is SPP part of the ERCOT grid?

No. SPP and ERCOT meet in Texas, but ERCOT is a separate interconnection; the Texas Panhandle and parts of East Texas are served through SPP or MISO rather than ERCOT.
